Lantern of Lost Memories by Sanaka Hiiragi
The Lantern of Lost Memories is a heartwarming, magical‑realist novel set in a mystical photo studio that exists between life and death.
In this cosy space, Hirasaka, a gentle photographer, guides souls who have just died. He gives them a stack of photographs—one for every day of their life—and asks them to choose one photo per year. These selected memories are placed inside a Japanese lantern, which then spins, allowing their lives to flash before them in one last, beautiful moment.
For some visitors, their most treasured memories have faded or become distorted. Hirasaka offers them a second chance: they can travel back in time to relive one special day and re-capture it through a new photograph.
The novel follows three characters:
-
Hatsue, a 92-year-old former nursery teacher, who revisits a significant moment from her early teaching days.
-
Waniguchi, a man with a complicated past in the yakuza, who struggles to find his “happy memory.”
-
Mitsuru, a young girl who died tragically, and whose one day to relive holds deep emotional weight.
Through these stories, the book explores memory, loss, human connection, and the way our lives are shaped by the moments we cherish—and the ones we regret.
It’s a healing, uplifting read that resonates deeply with themes of nostalgia and what it means to move on.
