Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them by J.K. Rowling

This book is presented as a textbook used at Hogwarts, written by the magizoologist Newt Scamander.

It’s a guide to magical creatures (“beasts”) from across five continents: their habits, habitats, and other important traits.

Some creatures will be familiar to Harry Potter readers (e.g. Hippogriff, Basilisk, Hungarian Horntail), while others are more obscure and surprising even to seasoned magical-creature enthusiasts.

The 2017/2018 editions include six new beasts (added in the updated text) that weren’t in earlier versions.

There’s a new foreword (in the updated edition) written “by” Newt Scamander, which gives extra context, especially about a “breach in the International Statute of Secrecy” in 1920s New York.

The tone is both informative and whimsical — it feels like a genuine in-universe magical textbook, but with charming commentary and insight.

According to the official J.K. Rowling / Wizarding-World site, it’s “an indispensable introduction to the magical beasts of the wizarding world.”
